Laboratory Animal Caretaker / EOA# 2019-33

The successful candidate must be able to perform daily animal husbandry procedures such as cleaning and move cages, feed animals, perform daily wellness checks on animals, and disinfect/sanitize cages using various detergents and washing methods. Must be able to work well as a team member, as well as independently. May perform other duties as assigned by the Facility Supervisor or Veterinarian. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES are but not limited to:
To handle and ensure humane care of research rodents. o Properly pick up, restrain and transfer animals between cages during routine husbandry tasks. o Be able to comply with all personal safety requirements, including proper donning of personal protective equipment. o Will work with various rodent housing systems. o Prepares and uses disinfectants and detergents to clean and disinfect animal quarters, cages and associated equipment. o Will be trained to operate large cage wash equipment and autoclave. o Will be required to remove husbandry-related waste in compliance with local and state regulations. o Keep accurate room logs for daily room checks. 866-946-9733 ?www.opwdd.ny.gov o Trains and assists investigators and new staff members with husbandry-related tasks. For example, may mix and/or administer medications according to specific instructions. o Transports supplies for the Animal Colony. o Acts as a liaison for researchers. o May be asked to review inventory and stock supplies, including unloading and transport shipments of husbandry and housekeeping supplies. o Performs other cleaning/sanitation duties as assigned. o Observe and report any abnormalities in animals, equipment, or facilities. o May be asked to assist with study endpoints. o Communicates well with the facility supervisor and veterinarian. o Participates in monthly staff meetings. o Complete all New York State required trainings, including online modules. o Must be willing to work weekends and holidays based on needs of the worksite. Observations/Handling:
o Observes, documents and reports on animal wellness, general husbandry, behavior and interactions, both normal and abnormal. o Maintains required records concerning health and location of animal(s) being cared for. o Restrains animals using proper techniques for the species as required for husbandry tasks. o Performs other observation duties as assigned.

Salary Range:
From $29589 to $36715 Annually
Minimum Qualification
High School diploma or GED equivalent preferred. No prior specific work experience required. o Employee should be able to use basic computer programs such as the internet and Microsoft Word for email, training, and basic data entry. o Must be able to read and follow written and verbal orders from facility supervisor and Veterinarian. o Must be able to write legibly and record health data. o Must have valid driver's license. POTENTIAL HAZARDS:
o Employee's work will involve working with laboratory rodents. o Employee will be exposed to unpleasant odors and animal wastes. o Hazardous chemicals include alcohols, bleach, cage wash detergents and acids, and other disinfectants. o Must be willing to work with both BSL1 and BSL2 level organisms. o Other occupational hazards include bites, scratches and ergonomic hazards (such as lifting). o Employee must be able to lift 50
pounds (feed and supplies) and carry for short distances without assistance at times. o Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program is required. Immunization for Tetanus is required unless waived by the employee. o Safety training and protective clothing, equipment, and supplies will be provided to the employee. Employee should be able to provide shoes suitable to working in a laboratory environment.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
