Museum Technician

The Museum Technician will support the work of the Division of Cultural Resource Stewardship at the Park and report directly to the Chief of Cultural Resource Stewardship. The incumbent will assist with work that focuses on the preservation of park's museum and archive collections. The incumbent will catalog specimens and complete records following established National Park Service procedures; assist with updating various accession records; match field and laboratory notes with related specimens; sort and clean specimens as required with guidance; make minor repairs on specimens with guidance; maintain collection storage and laboratory areas; prepare specimens for storage following established organizational principles and procedures; make photographic records of objects as required; monitor the environmental conditions of museum storage areas, and assist with the preparation of the annual inventory. Significant time and effort will be spent cataloging specimens and completing records in the NPS collection management software system. Exposure to and assistance with other aspects of cultural resource management is included. Physical Demands:
The work is primarily sedentary and performed in an office and/or collection storage area with prolonged work at a computer terminal; periods of prolonged standing, as well as some time spent walking, bending and climbing stairs is anticipated. Heavy items (e.g. boxes up to 50 pounds) are lifted and moved on a frequent basis. Occasional work with materials which are dusty and/or stored with protective chemicals may require the use of dust masks, gloves, or other protective devices. The incumbent may be required to operate a car to access the various park units. Location Description:
As a Museum Technician in the Division of Cultural Resource Stewardship at Gateway National Recreation Area(NRA)you will assist with the management of the Park's museum collection. Gateway NRA with resources in two states in nine historic districts has a significant collection of historic military and maritime structures. This includes the Fort Hancock and Sandy Hook Proving Ground NHL district and the individually listed Sandy Hook Light a NHL; the oldest active lighthouse in the US. Artifacts in the museum collection reflect the military history of the site as well as the history of the Park. Gateway NRA was established in 1972 as one of America's first urban national parks. Located in the heart of the largest metropolitan area in the US the park extends from Brooklyn and Queens, to Staten Island and Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and is one of the locations within the National Parks of New York Harbor (NPNH). NPNH includes 10 national parks sites with 23 unique destinations in and around four of the five boroughs of New York City and northern New Jersey. A variety of cultural events, housing and amenities associated with a major metropolitan area are available. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount o qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level:
Experience:
At least one year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Museum Technician. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. -OR- EDUCATION:
Completed a full four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled. One year of full time study is considered to be 30 semester hours. Please Note:

Experience:
Combination of specialized experience as described in the EXPERIENCE definition above and education as described in the EDUCATION definition above which total at least one year. For example, 6 months of specialized experience (50% of the specialized experience) and three years of education above high school (50% of the education) would qualify an applicant for this position. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e. beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. You must include transcripts. Volunteer
